NAME: Jenae Amell. GENDER: Cisgender female. RACE: Human. CLASS: Mage.- SPECIALIZATION: Shapeshifter.
- SCHOOLS OF MAGIC: Entropy & Storm.
AGE: Thirty three years old; born 9:8 Dragon. ORIENTATION: Pansexual, panromantic, and polyamorous.NATIONALITY: Though born in Kirkwall, she has identified as a Fereldan since shortly after being taken to Kinloch Hold. Her Marcher and Rivaini ancestry come from her mother and father, respectively.AFFILIATION: The Grey Wardens. Or at the very least, that was the last organization she was publicly tied to, before her disappearance.HEIGHT: Five feet, nine inches.HAIR: Dark curls which she manages with help from her magic. Though she stubbornly wore her hair long throughout the Blight, Jenae has opted for a shorter style in recent years, taking care to keep it cropped above her shoulders.EYES: A rich shade of brown. Save for when she shifts her shape, when they'll momentarily flash a sickly green—the color of the Fade—before regaining their usual hue. BUILD: Willowy, with few curves and the sort of legs that would go on forever if given the chance. Like many mages, she does not appear the combatant; all the same, her arms are well toned from wielding a staff all these years. ATTIRE: At present, Jenae dresses inconspicuously in clothes befitting a wayward traveler, taking care to avoid blue or silver lest the colors provoke any subconscious recognition from those she may encounter along the road. Otherwise, her preference is for well tailored garments that emphasize her stature, richly embroidered in the Rivaini style given she tends to forego jewelry. She also prefers skirts to trousers, a hangover from her Circle days.FACE CLAIM: Gugu Mbatha-Raw.- Jessica Sula (DA:O, DA:A)
MOTHER: Revka Amell. FATHER: Unspecified; will name if deemed particularly important. SIBLINGS: Four older siblings of indeterminate names and genders. All mages. OTHER RELATIVES: The extended Amell family, notably Leandra Amell and her children, Bethany, Carver, and Marian Hawke. SIGNIFICANT OTHER(S): To be determined.

SENTIMENTAL: excessively prone to feelings of tenderness, sadness, or nostalgia.- Sometimes, Jenae finds herself thinking fondly of the Circle, until she realizes such sentimental nonsense is ridiculous, after Uldred, after Jowan. Yet still the nonsense persists.
PERSUASIVE: good at persuading someone to do or believe something through reasoning or the use of temptation.- Perhaps even more so then her magic, Jenae will rely on her persuasive skills to get herself out of trouble or to simply get her way. That she convinced both Alistair and Loghain to put aside their differences for the Blight is but one testament to her silver tongue.
DETERMINED: possessing or displaying resolve. - Above all else, Jenae is determined to live, and it is this determination that drives her. It has led her this far, for good or for ill, and if it leads her to the cure for the Taint, then all the better.
INNOVATIVE: introducing new ideas; original and creative in thinking. - While many have questioned Jenae's decision to spare the Architect, she believes such a partnership necessary to solving the mysteries surrounding the Blight. It's unlikely her innovative approach to her Warden duties will be tolerated much longer, but one can hope otherwise.
RESTRAINED: characterized by reserve or moderation; unemotional or dispassionate. - Jenae learned more than magic during her time in the Circle; her restrained demeanor is a defense mechanism, a way to keep attention from her and her flaws. It requires great skill and trust to coax her out of this habit, as her friends can attest.
SELF-CRITICAL: critical of oneself, one's abilities, or one's actions in a self aware or unduly disapproving manner. - No one is more aware of Jenae's faults than Jenae herself, rest assured. In her more self-critical moments, she wonders if it wouldn't have been better, if she hadn't accepted Morrigan's aid and instead died alongside the Archdemon.
INSIGHTFUL: having or showing an accurate and deep understanding; perceptive. - Jenae is no blindly manipulative fool, despite what her enemies would have one believe. Her insightful nature makes her a keen listener, a cunning conversationalist, and an excellent gift giver.
COMPASSIONATE: feeling or showing sympathy or concern for others. - If Jenae was not compassionate, then she would not have saved Ferelden, now would she? She cares deeply for those she allows herself to trust, however foolish or misplaced such affection might turn out to be.
PROUD: having or showing a high or excessively high opinion of oneself or one's importance. - Jenae had been proud before she ever went through her Harrowing or bargained with Pride; perhaps this is why her pact with the demon has gone unnoticed all these years.
Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Proverbs 16:18 When Revka Amell learned she was pregnant a fourth time, she and her husband greeted the news with a mixture of optimism and dread. After all, their eldest child had been claimed by Kirkwall's Circle of Magi, while the next Starkhaven took; and though third and fourth were twins, you'd not know it, for one wore Nevarra's colors, the other Antiva's. So it was that when Jenae was born, her branch of the fallen Amell family quietly held out hope that this child would be theirs to keep, even as they cynically assumed the worst.
In the end, they were right. Yet let it never be said that the youngest Amell ever felt unloved or unwanted by her parents for the eleven years that they did raise her. Her parents foolishly, bravely loved their daughter even when she discovered she could summon sparks to her fingertips and accidentally electrocuted the cat. They loved their daughter even when the templars came a-calling, and she was no longer theirs. Despite efforts to persuade the Order to take her to Ostwick, as the Circle there held none of her absent siblings but was still located in the Free Marches, the Amells' fallen fortunes meant such attempts were doomed from the start, and the girl was taken to Kinloch Hold, Ferelden's Circle of Magi.
She was eleven when the templars came and took her, eleven years old when last she saw her family and had to struggle to keep from crying, because if her vision was blurred with tears then how was she properly to remember them all? Once she'd been brought to the tower, though, once she'd been stripped of possessions and dressed in robes like all the other scared children and locked away from the world, she finally broke down in tears. Which was so commonplace, and her fellows so overwhelmed with their own despair, that she received no sympathy that night, nor the next, nor the one following that.
The shock eventually wore off for Jenae, like it did for the other apprentices, and gradually, she stopped crying herself to sleep and started to accept that her future was here in the Fereldan Circle. So she devoted herself to her studies, eventually showing an affinity for the entropy school and the very lightning spells that had outed her as a mage in the first place. Her talents caught First Enchanter Irving's eye, and he himself became one of Jenae's instructors, wanting to encourage the girl's potential (and, some whispers said, groom her for his own position). She also did her best to avoid attracting any unnecessary templar attention, though such a thing wasn't always possible, given the fellow apprentice the Amell girl chose for her best friend: Jowan.
Her weakness was Pride. Jenae had always suspected this, yes, but it was something else entirely, to have it laid out so plainly in the Fade. She'd riddled with Sloth, fought against Rage, even manipulated Valor, and yet. It could have all been for naught, if Pride had attacked her upon revealing its true form, if the demon had not instead chosen to impart a few last words of wisdom. Naturally, Pride's advice frightened her more than anything else in her Harrowing, as clean and quick as it might have seemed to the templars. Because when Mouse had asked her to let him in, she hadn't truly said no.
Nevertheless: she succeeded, despite her Pride, only to have her newfound status as an official mage of Kinloch Hold thrown into turmoil the very next day. Such turmoil was common when one was best friends with Jowan, yet this time was different, this time had lasting consequences for them both. When told of her friend's affair with Lily, his impending Tranquility and their intentions to flee the Circle, Jenae panicked. Escape would mean death for Jowan, when—not if, when—the templars discovered his plot. So out of a desire to protect him, she revealed his plan to her mentor, the First Enchanter.
And her trust was betrayed. Irving did not care about Jowan, about saving him from his fate, no matter how she pleaded on her friend's behalf. He would rather sacrifice the boy so as to implicate Lily—and by extension the Chantry—in his crimes, and when Jenae told him she would not betray Jowan like this, well. Irving told her she already had.
So she was more than ready to leave the Circle, really, when Duncan offered the way out.
The year that followed has been well documented, and thus the details hardly bear repeating, save for a scant few. For when Jenae returned to Kinloch Hold and found the Circle all but broken, when her clever tongue and clever spells could not overcome Sloth's command to sleep...she did not borrow dreamers' forms to escape the Fade, as she later told her companions and the historians. Instead, she found Pride, who had once been called Mouse.
Appealing to the demon's essence, she proposed a deal: if Pride helped her escape Sloth's nightmare, then she would let Pride in. Not all the way, mind, for what triumph would there be in possessing her now? Barely a mage, barely a Grey Warden, with none of the self satisfaction or accomplishments that would sate the demon's, well, Pride. If Pride waited, however, if he waited until she had everything to lose, and no way to hold him back, then wouldn't that be a triumph for the ages?
And Pride agreed. When Jenae emerged from the Fade, triumphant at last, it was with a gleam in her eye and the knowledge of how to change her form. Because she'd been given such skills by the demon, rather than learnt them on her own, this gave her a connection to Pride that surpassed the Fade's limitations, though she could not be considered an abomination in the way Wynne or later Anders would be. After all, Pride had not possessed her, but merely gained a foothold in the world beyond the Veil. Yet this means the spirit gained a foothold into Jenae; should she falter, or the time should come, Pride can simply assume her form without needing to physically cross between the worlds otherwise.
It's difficult to say how she's managed to hold off her spirit for the past ten or so years. For every accomplishment carries a twinge of dread, that this should make the difference, this should mean she has everything to lose at last, and thus will lose it all. Yet perhaps her will is stronger than the spirit's, her pride greater than Pride itself. Perhaps the spirit means to lure her into a false sense of security and then strike, regardless of the terms of their bargain. Who can say? Yet recent years have brought more pressing concerns, and so her efforts have mostly gone towards researching the end of everything she stands for as a Grey Warden: the Blight, the Taint. The Calling.
Someone else will have to clean up Thedas this time.
